Mile High Mamas Amazon Voyage

Last week, I spent a fabulous evening out with some of my favorite local blogging mamas. Mile High Mamas and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science treated us to a tour of the just-opened Amazon Voyage Exhibit.

I had so much fun, first of all spending time with my good friends, but also seeing part of the museum WITHOUT MY KIDS. Totally different vibe, there. And there are a lot of neat things in the exhibit – I especially loved the cool necklaces made out of beetle parts! Weird and creepy, but beautiful at the same time. And the ginormous catfish should have given me nightmares, but somehow didn’t. The exhibit just opened at the end of September – you should head over to the museum and catch it before it ends in January! Many more details are available right here.

For the first time I can remember, we managed to get a decent group picture of the Mile High Mamas! Look at us!

Huge thanks to everyone who made this event possible – it was so much fun!

Mile High Mamas – Venice on the Creek Event!

We went to such a fun event this morning! Mile High Mamas/Mom it Forward paired with Denver’s Venice on the Creek to promote McDonald’s brand new frappes and fruit smoothies. What a blast!

I’ve lived in Denver for almost all my life, and I had no idea you could take a gondola ride through downtown! Venice on the Creek is located just off of Speer, Larimer, and 14th. It’s super fun – six people can fit aboard one of the gondolas (actually, they’re punts, not gondolas) for a leisurely tour, steered by a pole operator who serves as a tour guide to historical Denver. The rides are around $50, and they do romantic candlelit tours at night, too. How fun would that be? A bottle of wine, me and my hubby … sounds like heaven. If you’re interested in trying this out, get in touch via their website – reservations are a must.

I’m not sure if you can ever top the experience of riding a gondola with Ronald McDonald, though. That’s almost like a bucket list item, right?

Ronald and my kids, in the boat!

Checking out the boat

Just kickin' it!

Look, here we are in the smallest boat locks in the world! The girls got so nervous as our boat started to rise, and then the gates began to open – they were certain we were heading down a huge drop like Splash Mountain!

Nervous girls, thinking we're on Splash Mountain again!

Opening the gates

And the very reason we were here – McDonald’s! We each sampled the strawberry banana smoothies – super yummy!

Pablo enjoying his strawberry banana smoothie.

Thanks, Ronald!

I have a ridiculous amount of pictures on Flickr if you’d like to see more. Also, if you’re a local blogger, or even just a local mom, check out Mile High Mamas! They do lots of fun events, and it’s a great way to meet other fabulous social media mommies!

Mile High Mamas Guest Post: Raising Teenagers

Nothing is quite as humbling as parenting a teenager. My daughter, who once looked to me for all the answers, now regards me as if I’m suffering from dementia. If I were half as naive and gullible as she believes me to be, I’d be wearing my underwear on the outside of my clothes right now. And the worst part? I was just like her at that age. This is what I wrote about today on Mile High Mamas. Check it out!

A Day Made Better – Update!

Back in September, I attended a super fun Mile High Mamas event at the Warwick Hotel in downtown Denver. You may remember me mentioning that the event was put together by The Denver Post’s Mile High Mamas, Office Max, and Mom it Forward, and was designed to bring attention to Office Max’s national initiative A Day Made Better, which is providing one million dollars in school supplies to teachers in need. During the days that followed the event, while I was reading lots of witty recaps from the many social media moms in attendance, I discovered that one of the sponsors of the event, the delightful Barb Likos of Mom it Forward Colorado, was giving away a $100 Office Max gift card on her own site. Well, you know I was all over that. I nominated Pablo’s preschool teacher, Ms. Simmons, who spent two solid years pulling my boy out of his shell and gently shaping him into a kid who LOVES school, and who loves learning. And, guess what? She won!

So, last week, I took a trip up to our old ‘hood and hand delivered Ms. Simmons her prize! It was WONDERFUL to catch up with her. It was strange being back in that classroom, where we spent so much time – it was so hard to say goodbye to Ms. Simmons and Pablo’s team of teachers a couple of years ago when Pablo finished up preschool. I’m so grateful that circumstances have made it possible for us to place our child in another district, where his needs are being met so beautifully – but it is bittersweet to go back and see where we started, and realize what a struggle it is for so many teachers. She was SO GRATEFUL to receive this gift from Office Max, and I know she’ll put it to good use.

A huge thank you to Office Max, Mom it Forward, Barb Likos, and always, to Stephanie. Isn’t she darling?

Ms. Simmons!

Mile High Mamas at The Warwick

Throughout my glamorous life as a housewife and mother, I don’t find myself with a lot of opportunities to wear a cute dress and walk around with a wine glass in my hand, while discussing bloggy things with other social media mommies. This is why I love being a part of Mile High Mamas!

Last week, Mile High Mamas teamed up with Mom it Forward to support Office Max’s national initiative A Day Made Better to provide one million dollars in school supplies to teachers in need. The venue was the gorgeous outdoor patio at Randolph’s Restaurant and Bar at the amazing Warwick Hotel in downtown Denver. The Warwick generously provided wine and appetizers, and the evening was downright delightful. Complete recap with photos is right here. I can’t believe I missed out on jumping in the pool, fully clothed! Obviously I left just a few minutes too early!

I met many of these ladies last year, at the Mile High Mamas/Rocky Mountain Blogger’s Bash during the DNC. We kept mentioning how we really need to try to get together more often! And I was surprised to learn how many of them actually live on my side of town. I think I got talked into hosting an Eastside Bloggy Party at my house. Yay! Bring on the karaoke and live tweeting.

It’s rare for me to find myself among a whole group of chicks I can relate to, and these women are stellar. Mothers in Denver: Do you blog? Do you use your Twitter handle when introducing yourself to other moms on the playground? You need to be part of Mile High Mamas!

Mile High Mamas – Moms Night Out!

I know I’m a few days late in posting this. The BIG OLD BLIZZARD threw me off a little bit. And what did I tell you? Allll that snow we had melted in a day. I was in the backyard yesterday, and there wasn’t a speck of snow anywhere to be seen. I walked all around the yard, checking out everything that’s ready to bud out or bloom or emerge from the ground. Ah, springtime! Oh, but wait. It’s snowing like hell again today. D’oh!

ANYWAY. Last Wednesday, I went to a Mile High Mamas event at The D-Note off of Olde Wadsworth in Arvada. Quite a trek for me, since I’ve moved to the other side of town, but totally worth it. Lots of the great local bloggers I met last fall were there, and I met lots more for the first time. Those in attendance included:

I had such a good time. The D-Note is this charming old place where they have amazing pizza and live music, and I think it was a great venue for our meetup. It did kind of suck that we were seated literally right next to the band, only because we were trying to have lots of conversations, and it was LOUD. But it’s hard to complain about a night away from the kids, among such great women! Lori was telling me that she and her family live nearby, and spend many Sunday afternoons there at the D-Note, where the kids can actually run around the restaurant and get onstage to play toy instruments. Doesn’t that sound like a blast?

I wish I would have taken my camera. Twice this week, I’ve done camera-worthy things, and not taken a single picture! I suck! There are pictures on the Mile High Mamas page, if you’re interested. I’m not in any of them. Wait! Actually, I am! See what happens when you forget your camera? It’s like you were never there! I had dinner with my best friend from high school Saturday night, and forgot to take a picture of the two of us that night as well. I don’t know what my problem is!

If you’re a local mommy blogger, you should totally check out Mile High Mamas. It’s so much fun!

Mile High Mamas – Mom’s Night Out

So, the Neglectful Mother period has come to an end. I’m now back at home with no plans to go anywhere for quite awhile. The kids are happy! (I think?) I ended the party phase with a bang, though, drinking mojitos with a bunch of cool bloggy mamas! Friday night, I dragged my poor sister along with me to the Mile High Mamas Mom’s Night Out in honor of the MHM’s 1st Birthday – I say dragged because although she is a mama (of grown children) and now lives in the Mile High City, she’s not a blogger, and she has a hard time relating to bloggy stuff in general. But hey – she’s my sister, dammit, so she has to support me! And here’s something that cracks me up – she kept saying “You owe me big time!” whenever things got weird, like when she had to participate in Speed Dating, and share things about herself and her “blog.” Ha! But if you look at the group picture on page linked above, who do you see there? MY SISTER! I was on the phone telling Daddy how much cough medicine Mallory needed before bed and missed the group shot. But my sister got right in it! Too funny.

We had fun. The event took place at Lime XS in Capitol Hill. Kim and I parted ways with Paul and the kids and they headed to Mickey D’s playland while we headed downtown. I was envisioning driving around the block 37 times trying to find a spot I could parallel park my minivan in without injuring anyone, but wouldn’t you know it – I parked about two feet from the front door of the restaurant, in the very first spot. Woohoo! And my good luck continued throughout the night – I won a mix CD from the Greeblemonkey monthly giveaway. Whee! And giant pitchers of Mojitos kept appearing on our table all night long! Yippee!

It was great seeing Amber again, after the Rocky Mountain Blogger Bash a few weeks ago. She’s so bubbly and bright, she just lights up the room. And this was the first time I met many of Denver’s amazing bloggers. Here’s the list of attendees, copied from the MHM page: Gretchen from Lifenut, Aimee from Greeblemonkey, Annie from Anniethology, Lori from Weebles Wobblog, Amy from Inherent Passion, Denise from Eat, Play, Love, Jen from Laughing at Chaos, Anne from Twas Brillig, Laura aka ME, from LaLa Girl, Laurie from MomToBeDepot, Erin from Following My Folly, Kim from HighTechMomsClub, Nini from Delirious Zoo, Kira from Ki Words, Mary Beth from In the Painting of Chaos, Hannah from Marge in Real Life, Oz from Oz Spies, and, of course, Mile High Mamas founder Amber from Crazy Bloggin’ Canuck.

I’ve known Nini forever from Colorado Moms, and I “know” her sister-in-law Gretchen too, although this was the first time I’ve met Gretchen in person. I loved doing the Speed Dating thing, because I got to briefly talk to every single one of those awesome Mommy Blogger chicks. They’re so fun! I have pictures on Flickr right here. (Not many, unfortunately. Booooo!)

The rest of the weekend was nice and quiet, hanging out here at home with the monkeys. My sister came over for breakfast yesterday and we enjoyed the crisp morning outside on the patio. I’m about to pack up these little girls and head over to her place for a minute – I’m kind of ODing on Sister Time, but I still feel like I have so much time to make up for, after all the years Kim was absent from my life.

Wow, this post is ending rather awkwardly, isn’t it? Hmmm. I have to get in the shower like RIGHT NOW, though, so…we’ll just file this under ABRUPT ENDINGS. There ya go!
