Day of Silence

GLSEN Day of Silence

Today, April 20th, was Day of Silence at schools all across the country, and at my daughter’s high school as well.

What is the Day of Silence?

The Day of Silence is a student-led national event that brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Students from middle school to college take a vow of silence in an effort to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior by illustrating the silencing effect of bullying and harassment on LGBT students and those perceived to be LGBT.

I was proud to see my daughter decked out in her pride gear today, ready to show support for her gay and lesbian friends! (Honestly, though, I probably would have vetoed that shirt if I’d realized how low cut it was. Yikes. She had a hoodie on when she walked out the door!)

As the mom of a special needs child, I am extra sensitive to bullying, especially involving kids who are different in some way. I stress to my daughters that they need to look out for their brother at all times, and speak up for anyone they see being mistreated or harassed. And I love the idea of students leading an awareness campaign like this – advocating on behalf of their peers!

What’s this? 11/366

I went out to the frigid world to shovel snow today, and look what I found in my mailbox…a little something from Victoria’s Secret!

Goodies in the Mail!

It’s not for me. It’s for Kayley. In case you didn’t know, Victoria’s Secret is this: She doesn’t like fat girls.

P.S. It’s weird having a teenager who earns money and has her own debit card. Shit just shows up in the mail like this.

P.P.S. Does the picture make it look like it was cold as balls in Denver, Colorado today? The picture doesn’t lie. Like always, sixty degrees and sunny one day, blowing snow/white-out conditions/4 degrees Fahrenheit the next.

365 – Kayley’s Drawing.

Kayley doodles a lot. For a couple of days, she worked on this. I kept thinking of all the cool things it could eventually be, and I actually had visions of stealing it myself to turn into a book cover. Unfortunately, she gets bored with these things pretty quickly and quit drawing not long after I snapped this. She gave it to Pablo, who LOVES it, and he stashed it away in his special drawer, alongside his Squinkies.

In other words, I’m too lazy to write a real post.

I’ve decided to start posting my emails to Kayley at camp, since they practically read like a blog post anyway. I’ve been having trouble carving out time at night to blog (which is reflected in my traffic here!!) so maybe this will kick me in the ass to start writing again. Here you go:

Hi sweet pea! You’ve been on my mind nonstop since we spoke last night. I have to tell you, I’m SO pleased that you sounded so happy on the phone. I vividly remember LAST summer, when your first phone call home had a distinct “FML” vibe going on. I sensed none of that from you on the phone, though. Yay. I’m so glad you got a nice roomie who you sort of already know. Are you guys friends on Facebook too? (I want to stalk her! Haha!) I’ve had a few people ask about you. Somebody wanted you to babysit tonight!

Pablo and Mallory are all done with 1st grade. I know I mentioned it briefly on the phone, but on the day of their school party, Pablo got hurt on the playground. He was on top of that slide on the little kids’ playground, the one near where all the parents stand to pick up their kids. There’s a curved bar on top of it and he fell from that to the ground – about twelve feet. He banged his back on several ladder rungs on the way down, and was in major pain. The school nurse called me and sounded panicked – she said she was worried about cracked ribs. About stopped my heart, I’ll tell ya. I picked him up and we went to the ER down in Parker (after I was just there with Lexi and her crazy infected bug bite!) and he turned out to be fine. He was in pain for awhile, but no cracked ribs, and most importantly – no head injury. These kids – YOU kids, I should say – you’re giving me gray hair. And you ruined me for these guys – you were such a mellow, docile kid – you would never DREAM of climbing up on the roof of your playhouse or to the top of a tree. I was ill prepared for these wild little monkeys.

Over the weekend, we went to a birthday party up at this pool/park way up in Thornton. When Paul and I were trying to find the place, we were laughing a little because it was in the straight up ‘hood! Somebody even had a light-up statue of liberty figurine in their yard, which had obviously been stolen from a park or something. Hee! When we got to the pool, we were cracking up at how ghetto it was – the outside walls of the locker room and stuff were all tagged up. Yo, holmes! Let’s go tag the pool! Anyway. We were so pleasantly surprised when we realized the pool was FREAKIN’ AWESOME! It was similar to Pirate’s Cove – big waterslides, a lazy river, one of those huge bucket things that fills up and then dumps water on people in the pool – it was a blast. The kids had SO much fun. It was super clean once we were inside, too. And best of all, you can actually rent this place out, so the party guests were the only folks there. The water was shallow enough that the kids really didn’t even need their floaties. And you should have seen Pablo! He went down the BIG waterslide like fifty times. He loved it! Such a little daredevil. If you have a chance to get on Facebook, I uploaded a few pictures, and a short little video I took with my cell phone. I wish this place was closer to us! I doubt we’ll drive all the way across town and into the ‘hood to go to the pool, y’know?

Well, I’m going to wrap it up and say good night. I’m so tired – I swear, these kids are wearing me OUT. I need to keep them busy, though, or we’re all going to kill each other. I’m considering taking them out for a hike tomorrow! (Or, maybe we’ll stay home and color. So many choices!) Love you so, so, so very much. I really miss you. I’m glad you’re there, having fun, and kicking ass – but I sure do miss you. Be good – watch your mouth, stay out of trouble. Talk to you soon!

Mommy

Whew, that wasn’t so hard! And now, you’re all updated on my life. You’re welcome. ;-)

My daughter: MADE OF AWESOME.

Kayley’s been giving me a lot of trouble lately. Mostly typical teenager stuff. She’s had a hard time moving and starting high school with thousands of people she doesn’t know. She’s made some friends, which is great, but she’s had a really hard time figuring out how to make her way as a freshman in high school. Hard to watch, honestly, but I know it’s something she has to go through, just like we all did when we were fourteen.

But! I’m writing today to tell you something she’s doing that’s completely awesome. After a schedule adjustment, she ended up with an open period – and during that period, she’s going to work as an aide for the special needs kids at school. She’s SO excited about this! As you know, Kayley has a real way with Pablo, and she’s finding that it’s easy for her to relate to the older kids who are similar to him. I think it’s going to be win-win. Kayley will get credit for working there (which she desperately needs!), she’ll gain some sense of how good it feels to be kind to those who are often treated cruelly, and the kids there will have a blast spending time with HER. She’s patient and compassionate and funny, and she’s already really popular among the kids she’s going to be spending time with. Today is her first day, and I can’t wait to hear how it goes!

Purplicious.

Kayley outside Henry's Salon - loving her new purple hair!

Some of you know that Kayley’s been battling alopecia, and has been having a super rough time of things. A friend of mine from high school, Tony, works at an upscale salon in downtown Denver and agreed to work a little hair magic with Kayley to try to make things right. And he did such an outstanding job! I’m going to give him an amazing review on Yelp, too, but for now, here’s a plug. Need a fantastic stylist, who has decades of experience, and is a true artist with haircolor? Go see Anthony at Henry’s Salon. You won’t be disappointed. Tell him Laura and Kayley sent you!

It’s been 100% Kayley Perma-grin around here since last night. I’m sure today at school, all her little friends are oohing and ahhing over her awesomely purple hair. And, bonus, I’ve just been named Coolest Mom Ever. Yay! Seeing Kayley with a smile on her face again is the best part.

OMG I will never be this cool, EVAR.

Actually, that’s a lie. I was TOTALLY THIS COOL IN 8TH GRADE. You can ask RaeJean.

I stole Kayley’s digital camera and found DOZENS of self portraits, almost all in the same pouty-lipped pose. There were probably a dozen just of Kayley and her best friend Taylor, and here are a few of those. I actually remember how hard it was being almost 14, feeling like a grownup, wanting to be taken seriously, but still acting like a kid most of the time. Part of me wants to break out the camcorder and capture some of their smart assiness, so I can show it to them in five years and watch them cringe! The other part of me wants to hang out with them.

And holy cats, can you imagine what life is going to be like in our household in another eight or nine years, when I have THREE teenage girls?
