A Day Made Better – Update!

Back in September, I attended a super fun Mile High Mamas event at the Warwick Hotel in downtown Denver. You may remember me mentioning that the event was put together by The Denver Post’s Mile High Mamas, Office Max, and Mom it Forward, and was designed to bring attention to Office Max’s national initiative A Day Made Better, which is providing one million dollars in school supplies to teachers in need. During the days that followed the event, while I was reading lots of witty recaps from the many social media moms in attendance, I discovered that one of the sponsors of the event, the delightful Barb Likos of Mom it Forward Colorado, was giving away a $100 Office Max gift card on her own site. Well, you know I was all over that. I nominated Pablo’s preschool teacher, Ms. Simmons, who spent two solid years pulling my boy out of his shell and gently shaping him into a kid who LOVES school, and who loves learning. And, guess what? She won!

So, last week, I took a trip up to our old ‘hood and hand delivered Ms. Simmons her prize! It was WONDERFUL to catch up with her. It was strange being back in that classroom, where we spent so much time – it was so hard to say goodbye to Ms. Simmons and Pablo’s team of teachers a couple of years ago when Pablo finished up preschool. I’m so grateful that circumstances have made it possible for us to place our child in another district, where his needs are being met so beautifully – but it is bittersweet to go back and see where we started, and realize what a struggle it is for so many teachers. She was SO GRATEFUL to receive this gift from Office Max, and I know she’ll put it to good use.

A huge thank you to Office Max, Mom it Forward, Barb Likos, and always, to Stephanie. Isn’t she darling?

Ms. Simmons!

Such a doll as a wonderful niece – aren’t I lucky!!! – and a highly-talented and dedicated human being who just happens to be a teacher right now !!!
CONGRATULATIONS on your child’s success due to such capable handling and decision-making from parents and teachers.

You rock. I am not sure I would have thought to nominate a former teacher of my kids (of course, my oldest is a kindie, so I don’t have a lot of experience on that one). I have found the one gift that seems to keep on giving is showing gratitude. Makes you feel great, makes the recipient feel great. It’s all good.

    That is so awesome!
