It’s snowing!
Yay! First snow of the season. I’m cracking up at my kids – they are flipping out over the snow, like they’ve forgotten about the existence of snow altogether. They’re ready to go out and build a snowman, and I’m having a hard time convincing them that the light dusting we got of powdery, dry snow won’t stick together at all. Oh well. It’s Colorado, and I’m sure we have lots of snowman-worthy snow in our future. And I’m sure our biggest snowfall will occur after a 75 degree day, since that’s how it always goes around here.
I’m getting ready to meet Kayley and her dad over at her school for a parent teacher conference. (Cue scary music.) I have to take the little girls along with me, but maybe I can bring along some crayons or something to entertain them. I hate parent teacher conferences. I never realized how embarrassing it would be as a parent to have a slacker kid. I hate how WE are always judged by the teachers and given the hairy eyeball when Kayley doesn’t get her homework done or fails to turn it in, as if we’re somehow encouraging her to fail. We’ve done everything in our power to get her to step up and be a good student and she just has no interest whatsoever. I’m not sure where to go from here, but I’m picturing her having a career working at Target or something. Drag.
At least I have the little ones and their future music careers, right? They’ll take care of me in my old age – I’m sure of it!
Fingers crossed that K’s teachers have hopeful words for us!

LaLaGirl is the mother of a teenager and two young sets of twins. She's happily married, loves living in Colorado, and writes almost daily about married life, raising multiples, and parenting a child with autism.

Hope the meeting with K’s teacher went well. I know you guys have been struggling for years with her and her school work.
The little kids are so cute in their band. My favorite is M in her Batgirl costume.

That’s actually Nikki! I got all the girls’ haircuts and they look sort of alike now!
Yeah…feel better. As I dropped off he-child this morning, his teacher asked, “Did you tell your mom about what happened yesterday?” Uhhh, no.
Suppose all the glee of Mommy buying him a Brobee shirt and his sister a Toody shirt suppressed his memory.
Part of what he was SUPPOSED to tell me involved the fact that he now was supposed to do an assignment he’d “earned” out of. You’re not alone.
Will have to get ‘em in their tees…hand to heaven I thought of you when we were buying them yesterday…

I had my extreme slacker 13 year old son’s conference yesterday. I had a stomach ache all week dreading it. It was bad, very bad, but the teacher didn’t judge me like I thought she would. I just wish I could break through to him and get him to work.
As the mother of a 14 year old slacker I feel your pain, I truly do. It sucks ass, and I have NO SOLUTION for it. We should start a club.

Slacker kids – one of the 15 year olds, who is smarter than our whole household – is a slacker. Nothing is his fault: being late almost every stinkin day, forgetting to do homework (but he’s there for surfing the internet all right), getting poor grades because he can’t be bothered to do the work cuz “he’s smarter than everyone (quote) in his class. ”
My mom says she used to have that talk w/ my sister. She would say “you can be a XX all your life, you do not have to go to college.” My sister got lots of Ds, still went to college, and now is the main income earner in her family. Maybe the slackers will turn around? I dunno but it sure is frustrating to watch it all happen. AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGG!!!!
We have tried to curtail privledges w/o much success. One theory I have is that the slacker is bored. So, my solution is to turn up the volume on degree of difficulty. This was a successful strategy when the boys were in middle school. They went from their level math book to the next level math book. The grades improved and I didn’t hear “I’m bored!” I could go on an on but won’t. It’s just an idea.
