More toy recalls.

I can’t even imagine the hit that toy manufacturers are going to take for Christmas this year. Every week, we hear about more toys being recalled due to lead paint or choking hazards, and today, it was announced that AquaDots are being recalled…because they contain a chemical that converts into a powerful “date rape” drug when ingested. What? Doesn’t that sound like something…fictional? Like a far-fetched storyline on CSI or something? It’s just ludicrous!

Scientists say a chemical coating on the beads, when ingested, metabolizes into the so-called date rape drug gamma hydroxy butyrate. When eaten, the compound — made from common and easily available ingredients — can induce unconsciousness, seizures, drowsiness, coma and death.

It’s just crazy! It makes me think of that old SNL sketch with Jane Curtin and Dan Akroyd where they talked about dangerous toys like, “Johnny Switchblade” and “Bag ‘o Glass.” I guess I’m going to just have to let the kids play with rocks and dirt this Christmas.

With all of the recalls and the fact that we are currently living in Asia (where everything is imported from China) I have embraced hyenacart.com. We have always purchased a lot of wooden or handmade toys but with the recalls we have purchased only handmade this year. It is very, very scary and I wonder when it will end.

Rocks and dirt is right – ugh! McKenzie got some of those Aqua Dots this summer, in fact, and I can’t believe she never put one in her mouth because that would totally be something she’d do. She could have DIED, man? I had to tell her today that if she finds ANY of those to throw them away immediately and to never put them in her mouth.

What is the matter w/China these days??

with all these dangerous toys being imported lately, its a good thing these recalls are coming out BEFORE CHRISTMAS time, just before the busiest time of year to buy toys for Christmas gifts!
